I love you, piggies!

Yesterday we went to a pumpkin patch at a farm that we had never been to.  It is an actual working farm, and they had quite a bit of livestock.  My sons were so excited to see all of the animals, and being as I love animals too, I was pretty psyched as well.  They had beautiful female swines with litters of baby pigs, and they truly were the cutest things I had ever seen!  I wanted to scoop them up and kiss them!!!  They also had sheep, goats, a cow, chickens, and rabbits.  The cow was gi-normous and had the kindest eyes ever.  Have you ever noticed how kind they eyes of a cow are?  Or any animal, for that matter.  That is why it is just so mystifying to me how people can eat meat.  Just look in their eyes, JUST ONCE, and it changes you forever.  You see what beautiful creatures they are, and I don't see how you could EVER bring yourself to allowing them to be harmed and killed and prepared for your dinner plate (especially when there is absolutely no nutritional reason to do so!!!).

One year ago today...

One year ago today I woke up at around 5 o'clock in the morning with intense contractions (yes, I was hugely pregnant).  I didn't want to go into labor on the 22nd, because that is our wedding anniversary.  But the contractions were coming at an increasingly regular interval, so my husband and I got up, thinking we'd better get prepared to call our midwives.  After I got up, started walking around and had a little breakfast, the contractions subsided.  It wasn't time after all!  I was thrilled.  I also had an appointment later that day to receive my second Reiki attunement, so I was happy that I could still fit that in as well (yup; I gave birth to a Reiki baby!).  It was such a gorgeous autumn day, and I knew my baby was going to come within the next couple of days, and I was so happy.  It was also our third anniversary, as I said, so that night we went out to have an awesome dinner.  I hadn't been able to eat much in weeks because I had such wicked heartburn.  But that night I was suddenly ravenous and I had a huge plate of fries and a portobello mushroom burger (SOOOO yummy!).  I also slept amazingly well that night, which is another thing that I hadn't been doing in awhile due to the uncomfortable last stages of pregnancy.  It was like my body knew, and it was preparing for the work ahead!!!Read more... )

We woke up to a bit of snow that is now morphing into rain/ freezing rain; and there is frost everywhere.  AWESOME!!!!  I have become a total cold-weather babe.  I love it.  Maybe it is because I am a knitter or something, but when I get to deck myself out in sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens, boots, and coats, I just LOVE it!!!!  Plus, it was a really long summer.  And hot.  I was definitely ready for some cooler weather!  It makes fall so much more fun.  It makes me think of snuggling in front of a warm fire; drinking hot chocolate, cider, and tea; baking pumpkin bread and harvest pies and holiday cookies.... you get the drift!  I [heart] this time of year!!!!!!

Isn't being a mother challenging enough?

Why do we have to fight amongst ourselves, too?  I'm talking about being a stay-at-home mom here.  I have been a SAHM for over three years now (just count the age of my eldest son), and this debate of the working mom vs. SAHM comes up so often it is amazing.  So first, let me just give you my position on it.  To me, it doesn't matter if you are a mom who works out of the home or in the home; being a mom is an everyday challenge, and a round-the-clock position.  I have nothing but the utmost respect for moms who work out of the home; most of my friends do so and I admire them greatly.  I also admire the stay-at-home moms.  There is no one right way to be a mom; we all do what is best for ourselves and for our families, and that is really all that matters.  I don't know if the working moms get a lot of flak from friends, family, or society for doing what they do, but I know that I run into PLENTY of flak from people who think that, because I stay at home with my kids, I don't WORK.

Oops, I forgot how to live in the moment

Phoenix's fever seems to finally be under control today.  He is still very fussy and not sleeping well at all (nor are any of us as a result), but I am hoping this means he is on the upswing.  I'm feeling a little sick but that, again, is probably more just a result of feeling run-down and the lack of sleep.  Ash has had a very minor temperature off and on, but he sickness rarely affects his energy levels (that has only happened when he has had severe ear infections).  Mac is healthy as a horse as always; though I think he, too, is feeling the lack of sleep!

You may now call me Mrs. Mac!

Okay, I know you are probably wondering why I say that NOW, after having been married for almost four years. Well, the thing of it is, I like to think of myself as a feminist. And I am, and so is my husband. But I was very eager to take his name after we got married, not because I was becoming his "property", but because it unified us as a family. And I know a lot of people nowadays do the whole name combination thing (Jolie-Pitt comes to mind), but my maiden name was long and his name is long, and it would have been confusing. If it was short and sweet like Jolie-Pitt maybe we would have considered it! Haha.

I haven't been posting too much lately, so I will provide a quick recap (for those who don't know) about what is going on with us and why we're so darned busy.

The hub is still working full-time and going to school full-time, but we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.... FINALLY!  He graduates on June 13, which means right now is super duper CRUNCH TIME.  He has several papers and projects due in the next couple of weeks and the poor guy is cramming his behind off trying to get everything done.  I cannot wait to see him walk across that stage!  It has been a really difficult journey for both of us, so in a way I feel like I'm graduating, too.

Mother's Day Proclamation

(I found this on Marianne Williamson's website and just loved it!)

Mother's Day Proclamation

by Julia Ward Howe, 1870

Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

The most amazing experience of my life!

As you all know, we have two wonderful sons, Ash and Phoenix. While I was pregnant with Ash, I was really scared about the birthing process and I made my decisions accordingly. It turned out to be an incredibly easy birth, and for me, the worst part was getting the epidural. It was very painful for me (which sounds strange in comparison with childbirth, but trust me, it hurt!) and it just felt strange and wrong. I was rushed into making the decision and after we had him, Luke and I were certain that when we had our next child we wanted to choose a different route.

Knitting is saving my life right now.

We are in the process of househunting/ buying our first home.  It is daunting, to say the least.  It is crazy and incredibly time-consuming and, well, it feels "tornado-like"!  The first house we liked and attempted to buy didn't really happen, so now we are on attempt #2 and I am anxious out of my mind.  I am not exactly a low-key person to begin with.  I am admittedly high-strung.  Easily stressed.  Downright neurotic.  And the worst thing for me is WAITING.  Waiting to hear what is going to happen next and knowing that, at this point, it is completely out of my hands (another thing that drives me bonkers).  I know, I know; spiritually these are all golden lessons and we all have to learn them in some form or another in our lives.  I get that, and I am doing my best to "surrender" and "go with the flow" and all of those other things that we are supposed to do when we are in this in-between purgatory called WAITING.

The Seven Powers of Fairy!
by Silver RavenWolf

I have spent the week researching, contemplating, and taking care of family.  At 3:00 AM, pondering an old question of a friend, I thought you might enjoy reading these principles in association with the happenings in your current life -- and in your communion with your garden.  Did you ever notice that the traditional Star of Fairy has seven points?  Why not put a fairy star in your garden, calling in and thinking about the following...I give you only the bare bones...it is your own thoughts that must carry the information into your Spirit.

We have these beautiful snow geese who fly by our house every morning and often land on our roof or a neighbor's roof.  They usually hang out for awhile, honking away, and doing cool goose-like things like standing on one foot.  Ash has come to know their sound, and he runs to the door excitedly every time he hears them come near.  It has become a fun tradition to go outside and look at them with Ash, and it has been a great learning experience for him!  So we are big fans of the geese.

I have avoided reading this book for a long time.  I often read the synopsis and thought, "I'm not ready yet!"  This book is very sad, and I am the kind of person who is unable to compartmentalize grief!  Even if I read about it or see a movie about it, dude, it is real to me and I am off on a crying fest for days!
